Background of the Study

Environmental reporting involves the disclosure of information about an organization’s environmental impact, including sustainability initiatives, resource usage, and emissions data. Seplat Energy Plc, a leading energy company in Nigeria, uses environmental reporting to enhance transparency and build trust among stakeholders (Ajayi & Bello, 2024).

Environmental reporting is increasingly recognized as a critical tool for fostering stakeholder trust, particularly in industries with significant environmental footprints like energy and oil. Transparent reporting helps organizations demonstrate accountability and commitment to sustainable practices, thereby improving their reputation and stakeholder relationships. However, inconsistencies in reporting standards and inadequate enforcement of environmental laws pose challenges to its effectiveness.

This study examines the relationship between environmental reporting and stakeholder trust at Seplat Energy Plc, emphasizing the role of transparency in building long-term relationships.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the benefits of environmental reporting, its adoption in Nigeria remains inconsistent, with many companies failing to meet global standards. For Seplat Energy Plc, effectively using environmental reporting to build stakeholder trust requires overcoming challenges such as lack of standardization, limited awareness, and potential reputational risks from inadequate disclosures (Ogunleye et al., 2025).

This study investigates how environmental reporting affects stakeholder trust, focusing on Seplat Energy Plc’s practices and outcomes.
